Frequently Asked Questions

What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is one of the gentlest therapies for dealing with  stress and trauma.

Craniosacral Therapy is a development of osteopathy and is extremely sensitive to the needs of the body. Many symptoms respond well to a treatment programme. It is suitable to use with adults, babies and children. A non-invasive and very gentle, supportive way of working.

Partially based on the theory of 'cell memory' it works on the premise that different muscles/body cells hold the trauma issues (which can sometimes lead to physical problems) and can be released.

Craniosacral therapy trusts the 'wisdom of the body' that it will deal with the issues when it is ready and at its own speed. As craniosacral therapy strengthens the body, past trauma may come up but only when you are ready to deal with it. Nothing is forced.

Craniosacral therapy can release the patterns which cause physical and emotional problems at source. So after the initial session programme you do not have to keep going back repeatedly for more work on the same problems.

Is craniosacral therapy safe for my baby?

Because the therapy is so gentle it can be used on new born babies. It is helpful for symptoms such as colic and can help where babies cry excessively. If a baby has been through  caesarean section, suction, or forceps sometimes the skull bones can be affected and a craniosacral therapist can readjust this using extremely light touch. Childhood problems such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHS), autism, bed-wetting and asthma often respond well to craniosacral therapy.

What qualifications do craniosacral therapists have?

In order to practice as a fully registered craniosacral therapist it is necessary to have a good anatomical qualification and study for 2 years to obtain a Diploma (following practical and theoretical examinations) from a school approved by the Craniosacral Therapy Association. You are required to provide details of fully approved Continuing Professional Development and be fully insured to remain registered with the Association.
